Sir John Arthur Brabham, popularly known as Jack Brabham, was born on April 2, 1926. He was bor in the humble town of Hurstville, Australia. He revolutionized the way racing was approached and forever changing the landscape of the sport. Brabham defied the odds and rose to become a three-time F1 World Champion

He learnt drive the family car at 12 years old. He attended technical college where he studied metalwork, carpentry, and technical drawing.

At 15 he left school and started work at a local garage. At night he joined a course in mechanical engineering. He then started a business, fixing up old and damaged motorbike and selling these for a profit.

He signed for the RAAF in May 1944 (after his 18th birthday.) The only positions available were in the engineering departments. While he did not get his choice to become a pilot the training served him well for his future motor racing career. His posting involved maintaining Bristol Beaufighters at No. 5 Operational Training Unit.

Jack’s entry into motorsport happened almost by accident His partner, Johnny Schonberg, used to race a midget car that Jack had built. Schonberg’s wife convinced him to stop racing and so Brabham took over. He found that he had a natural talent when he won on the 3rd night he raced.

  • 1950–1951 Australian championship

In this period he was christened with a new nickname “Black Jack”. The origin is often disputed but is most likely one of the follwing two resns
