Oscar Piastri arguably one of the most talented F1 drivers on the grid at the moment. talented racing. He’s only 22 and has already achieved so much. He is widely regarded as one of the most promising young drivers on the scene today.

What sets Piastri apart from many other young drivers is his maturity and professionalism both on and off the track. He is a serious and focused individual who takes his racing very seriously, but he also has a good sense of humor and is well-liked by his peers.

He has worked with some of the best teams and coaches in the business and has benefited from their expertise and guidance throughout his career. Oscar has just achieved his 1st career podium at the 2023 Japanese GP.

Verstappen’s commanding lead of 0.581 seconds over Piastri represents the largest pole margin at Suzuka since Rubens Barrichello’s performance in 2003. Sky Sports F1 commentator Karun Chandhok described Verstappen’s lap as “one of the greatest in F1 qualifying history,” and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner echoed this sentiment, calling Verstappen’s laps “stunning” and “mind-blowing.”

Oscar Piastri: Early Beginnings and Passion for Racing

Piastri has had an exciting rise through the ranks of racing disciplines he has competed in.

Radio Controlled Cars

On a trip to the US, Oscar’s dad – Chris – came back with a radio controlled monster truck for Oscar. This enthralled Oscar and he started to constantly drove it around in the backyard or school oval at one point.

The monster truck made way for radio controlled racing cars and Oscar found his passion.

At nine years old Oscar was beating other drivers twice his age. He used to have to stand on the grandstand to see over the heads of the other, older drivers.

Success In Junior Racing Categories

In 2011 his father introduced him to go-karting, and he quickly fell in love with the sport.

By the time he was 12, he had won multiple state championships in Australia, and was quickly making a name for himself in the world of karting.

By 2014 he was racing internationally with Ricky Flynn Motorsport.

In 2016 he moved to the United Kingdom, and he came sixth in the 2016 World Championship in Bahrain.

Formula 4

In 2016, Piastri made the move up to single-seater racing, competing in the Victorian Formula Ford Championship. He won the championship in his first season and went on to win the Australian Formula Ford Championship the following year.

In 2016 he also joined the Formula 4 circuit where he won the support and sponsorship of from his father’s company – HP Tuners.

He achieved 2 podiums in 2016 and ended up in 6th place overall in the championship.

In 2017 he was  named as a driver with the TRS Arden Junior Racing Team for the British F4 championship. He won six pile positions and won  six races and ended up 2nd in the championship.

He had caught the eye of many senior team principles (such as Christiaan Horner or Red Bull).

In December 2018, Oscar took part in the post-season test at Yas Marina (Abu Dhabi) with the Trident racing team. This did not result in a drive.

Oscar Piastri Formula Renault Eurocup

In 2018 he returned to Arden in the Formula Renault Eurocup series. He finished the season in 9th position, with two race wins and five podium finishes to his name.

In 2019 he moved over to drive for the R-ace GP team. He achieved his first win of the series at Silverstone and replicated the feat the next day at the same venue.

2019 was a successful  year for Oscar.

Not only did he win the Formula Renault championship in his second year of racing, but he ended up claiming the titles in Formula 3 and Formula 2 over the next two seasons.

He is the only driver to ever win the three categories consecutively.

Impressive Debut In Formula 3

In October 2019 he participated in the post season test with the reigning champions – team Prema Racing. He signed on to drive for – team Prema Racing for the 2020 season.

He really made his mark on the world of motorsport at Prema Racing. Competing in the FIA Formula 3 championship once again, he won the championship in dramatic fashion at the final round of the season in Mugello, Italy.

After his FIA Formula 3 championship win, Piastri was quickly signed up by the Alpine Academy, the young driver development program of the Alpine F1 team (formerly known as Renault). He also joined the Formula 2 grid in 2021, once again with Prema Racing, as he continued his climb up the motorsport ladder.

Piastri’s championship win was a remarkable achievement, particularly given the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The season was heavily disrupted, with several races cancelled or postponed, and Piastri had to overcome a number of setbacks along the way.

But he showed remarkable resilience and determination, consistently delivering strong performances and scoring crucial points when it mattered most.

In his debut season in Formula 2, Piastri has already shown that he has what it takes to compete at the highest level. He finished on the podium in just his second race and has consistently been one of the strongest drivers on the grid.

He achieved first place in the championship.

Oscar Piastri His First F1 Test

Piastri took part in his first Formula One test in October 2020 with the Renault F1 Team. The test was held at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The car he rove during the test was the Renault R.S.18. Oscar drove alongside fellow academy drivers Christian Lundgaard and Zhou Guanyu.

He continued on as a member of the Alpine Academy in 2021 and had the good fortune to drive in his second test in 2021 where he drove the Alpine A521 at Yas Marina Circuit in December.

Piastri was appointed as BWT Alpine and the McLaren F1 team’s reserve driver for the 2022 season.

Piastri participated in a third test privately held by McLaren in the previous year spec McLaren car at Circuit Paul Ricard the week before the São Paulo Grand Prix.

In June 2022, it was announced that Oscar would drive for Williams in 2023 as a loan driver from Alpine.

Alpine hoped that there 2023 drivers would be Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso. In August Fernando Alonso advised that he would be leaving Alpine and driving for Aston Martin where he would replace retiring Sebastian Vettel.

After Alonso announce his move to Aston Martin, Alpine tweeted that Oscar would be driving with Esteban Ocon in 2023.

That was publicly refuted by Oscar who announced that he would be driving for McLaren in 2023 (replacing Daniel Riccardo.)

Alpine was naturally very upset and launched a contract dispute with Oscar which was eventually settled by the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board (CRB).

Alpine eventually replaced Alonso with Pierre Gasly.

Piastri joined Lando Norris on the McLaren grid.

Unfortunately, the McLaren car was way off the pace for the 1st half of 2023 and their results were dismal to say the least.  After upgrades the team is back on track. and Oscar has not disappointed!

After Daniel Ricciardo was sacked by McLaren and the team employed Oscar Piastri, Daniel contacted Oscar to say well done. He confirmed he had no hard feelings and wished him all of the best.
