British GP Results – Main race

Wow, who would have thought that a start with two McLarens and Red Bull (Max Verstappen) would end the way it did? Lano Norris had a better start than Max and led into the first corner. For the 1st two laps the order was Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and then Oscar Piastri who is showing his incredible talent.

Russel passed the Ferrari’s when they pitted early for new tires. George ended up in 4th pace by lap 28. Lewis Hamilton worked his way through the track and by lap 28 he was behind George Russel.

In lap 28 Lewis was in 5th place. George pitted in lap 29 and ended up behind Lewis and Charles Leclerc.. Oscar Piastri pitted on lap 30 and ended up in lap 7. On lap 31 George achieved a great overtake of Calos Sainz.

By lap 32 the top ten order was as follows.

  • Verstappen
  • Norris
  • Hamilton
  • Alonso
  • Gasly
  • Piastri
  • Albon
  • Russel
  • Leclerc
  • Sainz

In lap 35 Kevin Magnussen’s engine failed and started to burn. This activated the virtual safety car. Many of the drivers took the opportunity to for a cheap pit to change tires.

Kevin Magnussen Fire

The caution was changed to a full safety car at which point Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, Fernado Alonso all pitted. Under the safety car speeds the top three drivers were able to maintain their track positions.

It took a long time for the damaged Haas to be removed and the safety car was only withdrawn at the end of lap 38.

Lap 39 to The End

The restart happened on lap 39 and Max Verstappen pulled away. Lando Norris’s tires were not up to heat and Lewis was doggedly tying to overtake. Without DRS he couldn’t manage it.

By lap 40 Max had already put 2 seconds between him and Norris. There was some great wheel to wheel racing between the 2 drivers. BY lap 41 DRS became available and Lewis made a few attempts, one of which were successful.

Perez, Albon (yes you hear that correctly!) and Charles Leclerc all passed Sains in lap 44.

Lap 46

On Lap 46 Pierre Gasly’s car struggled with a broken suspension which occurred after contact with Lance Stroll. Gasly made it back into the pits and so there was no requirement for a yellow flag.

Max Verstappen finished in front making his record 11 consecutive podium finishes and 6 wins in a row.

When everything is considered, the Silverstone GP was the most exciting event of the season. It’s the first time that McLaren have been competitive and hopefully its the first of many.

The final results are summarized in the table below.
