After a few sideways moves Ron Walker and telecommunications company Telstra lobbied for Webber to replace Fernando Alonso at Minardi for the first three races of the 2002 season. His Minardi PS02-Asiatech car was underdeveloped and he was barely able to fit inside it due to his height.

He qualified 18th for the Australian Grand Prix which was his first race. Luck followed him and he finished fifth after a massive number of first-lap retirements in his debut race.

The team consequently retained Webber for the rest of the season.
