Lawrence Stroll – Early Life and Education

Lawrence Sheldon Strulović was born on July 11, 1959, in Montreal, Quebec, to a Jewish family. His father, Leo Strulovitch, was a fashion importer who brought Pierre Cardin and Ralph Lauren clothing to Canada.

His mother, Liliane Strulovitch, was a homemaker. He has a sister named Karen Strulovitch.

Stroll attended The Selwyn House School and The Trinity College School in Ontario. He then studied business administration at McGill University, but dropped out after two years to pursue his passion for fashion.

Stroll started his career in the fashion industry by working for his father’s company, Polo Ralph Lauren Canada. He later took the Ralph Lauren brand to Europe and became its licensee for men’s clothing, accessories, and fragrances.

In 1989, he partnered with Hong Kong investor Silas Chou to form Sportswear Holdings, a private equity firm that specialized in fashion investments.


Together, they acquired a controlling stake in Tommy Hilfiger for $100 million and turned it into a global phenomenon. They also invested in other brands like Pepe Jeans, Hackett, and Karl Lagerfeld.

In 2003, they sold their stake in Tommy Hilfiger for $1.6 billion and bought a majority stake in Michael Kors for $100 million.
